“Reserva Natural Local da Foz do Almargem e do Trafal”
A futura Reserva Natural Local abrange cerca de 135 hectares, na faixa litoral da freguesia de Quarteira, e é atravessada por duas ribeiras, - a ribeira da Fonte Santa ou do Almargem e a ribeira do Carcavai. Constitui uma das importantes zonas húmidas do Algarve e nela se destaca, ao nível da biodiversidade, a existência de, pelo menos, 236 espécies de flora, com 17 espécies com interesse de conservação ou elevado valor patrimonial (e.g. Armeria macrophylla, Linaria munbyana, Malcolmia triloba subsps. gracilima) e 11 habitats naturais e semi-naturais (e.g. 1150 - Lagunas Costeiras e 2130 - Dunas fixas com vegetação herbácea); 312 espécies de fauna, com 139 espécies de avifauna, das quais 27 estão ameaçadas e 135 espécies de insetos, identificadas até à data.
Esta classificação irá privilegiar a proteção e valorização dos recursos e dos sistemas naturais, salvaguardando a biodiversidade do local, bem como a preservação dos valores paisagísticos, culturais e sociais. Os objetivos da criação desta Reserva passam, deste modo, pelo aprofundamento do conhecimento desta área com vista à conservação e/ou recuperação dos ecossistemas; promoção dos valores naturais e culturais; promoção de práticas educativas e científicas que conduzam a uma maior literacia ambiental e cultura científica; aposta na monitorização de espécies e habitats e dos processos hidrológicos, biofísicos, climáticos, geológicos, ecológicos e socioeconómicos; promoção do ordenamento do território e do usufruto sustentável do território ao nível turístico, desportivo e de lazer; ou ainda o fomento do desenvolvimento económico, social e cultural da região, de forma equilibrada e sustentada, beneficiando, sempre que possível, as comunidades locais.
Releva-se que esta área constitui um último reduto para muitas espécies de fauna e flora bem como para a realização de atividades de lazer e bem-estar num litoral muito urbanizado onde a pressão antrópica é cada vez maior, e que urge preservar.
O processo de classificação e regulamento estiveram em consulta pública entre julho e agosto de 2022, encontrando-se agora na fase de elaboração do Relatório de Ponderação, devendo seguir, posteriormente, os trâmites legais de aprovação em Reunião de Câmara e Assembleia Municipal.

"Local Nature Reserve of Foz do Almargem and Trafal"
The future Local Nature Reserve covers about 135 hectares, along the coastline of the parish of Quarteira, and is crossed by two streams, - the Fonte Santa or Almargem stream and the Carcavai stream. It is one of the Algarve's important wetlands and, in terms of biodiversity, it is home to at least 236 species of flora, with 17 species of conservation interest or high patrimonial value (e.g. Armeria macrophylla, Linaria munbyana, Malcolmia triloba subsps. gracilima) and 11 natural and semi-natural habitats (e.g. Coastal Lagoons and Fixed Dunes with herbaceous vegetation); 312 species of fauna, with 139 species of avifauna, of which 27 are threatened and 135 species of insects identified up to now.
This classification will privilege the protection and enhancement of natural resources and systems, safeguarding the biodiversity of the area, as well as the preservation of the landscape, cultural and social values. The objectives of the creation of this Reserve are, therefore, to deepen the knowledge of this area with a view to the conservation and/or recovery of the ecosystems; to promote natural and cultural values; and to promote educational and scientific practices that lead to greater environmental literacy and scientific culture; investment in monitoring species and habitats and hydrological, biophysical, climatic, geological, ecological and socio-economic processes; promoting regional planning and sustainable use of the area in terms of tourism, sport and leisure; and promoting the economic, social and cultural development of the region in a balanced and sustained way, benefiting, whenever possible, the local communities.
It should be noted that this area is a last refuge for many species of fauna and flora, as well as for leisure and well-being activities on a highly urbanised coastline where anthropic pressure is increasing, and which must be preserved.
The classification process and regulations were in public consultation between July and August 2022, and are now in the phase of drafting the Weighting Report, and should subsequently follow the legal procedures for approval by the Town Council and Municipal Assembly.

O Passatempo “CONHECE E PROTEGE”, decorre entre os dias 5 de agosto e 22 de setembro, na área da futura Reserva Natural Local da Foz do Almargem e do Trafal, tendo como objetivo a sua promoção.
No dia 23 de setembro de 2023, os premiados serão conhecidos na FAVA – Feira do Ambiente e Vegan, em Loulé.
